Corrections Officer Emil Sorn believed the inmates at Larsan State Prison were coddled by the system, had too many rights, and never received any real punishment for their crimes. As sergeant in charge of the evening shift, disrespect or disobedience in any form was dealt with swiftly, severely, and quietly. The idea started in a bar after a couple of drinks, and like most ideas so conceived, it should’ve stayed there. If the accused is granted the right to face their accuser, then the victim should have the right to confront the perpetrator. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a life for a life. There is a fine line between Justice and Revenge. Emil Sorn is about to cross it
Let me start out by saying I was given a free copy f this book by the author in return for an honest review. While we are all familiar with the crime genre it always deals with them before, what I mean is that once the perpetrator has justice served on them that is the end of there story. We all give little thought to what happens when they are locked up in prison. Corrections officers are the backbone of our justice system. But we never give them any thought, these are the men and women who make sure that our criminals serve the time they have been given. They have a thankless job and we only ever hear about them when something goes terribly wrong. with that said this book is not about these people who clock in each day and do the best they can for not only our society but also those who are bang up behind bars.
Whilst this is a short book its scope is much bigger than you would first imagine. This is a book of a family’s saga. Our lead Emil Sorn is only a young boy when this authors tale starts out but is within these brief moments that the seeds of who he will become are sown. We are lead to believe that once a criminal is locked up that it should be a matter of them serving out there time in peace and quiet. But for Emil, he has to bear witness to events that will tear his young world apart. With his father working as a corrections officer he ends up being apart of one of those moments that flash up on the news. It is the murder of his father that send Emil on path that no one can stop him from. He is an interesting and well-plotted character. As we follow him through his life we get to see how pain and revenge can twist a person into something they where never suppose to be. I like the way the author does this in small increments. There is no big flip from one Emil to another but a slow twisting of the screws inside his head. It is a corrupting force that once it has a hold of him will never let go.
The author does an amazing job as he brings us into a world not many of us can imagine. His landscape is carefully crafted to give us the uninitiated a glimpse into the world of prisons, all the while giving himself scope to tell the plot he set out to do. This is a book that does not hang around and with so much to tell there is always the worry of becoming lost between the pages. But Kelso managed to keep me where I need to be with enough information that the time jumps didn’t jolt me out of the headspace. He shows us the horrors of what can take place behind the wall of any prison in the world. Within these pages, we get to see what can happen when things go very wrong. Like I said before this is also the story of what happens to a man who is consumed with hate and revenge. I’m always drawn in by tales of these nature. I realize we all have these things within us if someone hurt a family member or someone we love what length we not go to, to get revenge. For most though this would be a fevered dream that we would not act on. So in seeing Emil’s story, it is this dream acted out on those who have hurt us. But this is not wish fulfillment, the author shows the dark side of such thoughts. The toll it takes is a debt that no one can pay for no matter what the may say.
This is a book that kept me on my toes and times made me hold my breath. As the reader, you can see what is going to happen but there is no way to stop this runaway train. As with all stories of revenge, it is the damage done by that person on the way that they never account for. For me, this was handled in a very professional way. the author displays his skill as a writer and keeps you locked in never wanting to turn away no matter how bad things get. He has delivered a fast-paced story that is sure to keep any reader wanting more and ending that manages to keep within the realms of possibility whilst still being shocking. I look forward to seeing what else he has to offer.

After the bitter cold of the last two weeks, we have a bit of a warming trend going on. Now I feel like I’m able to share a few winter pics since they won’t make me feel even colder than I was.
This one was on my route one of those bitter cold days when the trees in the mountains froze in such a lovely way.

Captain Obvious takes a break
Greetings to all, Major Irony here in place for Captain Obvious who is taking a rest at the moment. He had a hard time with his last report and ran around screaming something about his water not having enough water in it. He accepted the kind offer by the nice gentlemen for an all expense paid vacation. They tell me he likes his padded room but feels that the straight jacket chafes a little. Sergeant Sarcasm and I expect to see him back at his post sometime before the end of the year (hopefully).
But now, on with today’s report. After the last week of frigid temperatures across most of the eastern U.S. we seem to have hit a slight warming trend. With temperatures climbing I thought people might be in the mood to see a bit of weather irony. Although it was very tempting to take this particular right turn, especially last week, to see if somehow the border of this town could magically repel cold weather and live up to its name, alas, I did not. It was a pleasant fiction though, one that warmed my thoughts if nothing else to believe that there may be this amazing warm place of summer that existed even in the midst of the coldest winter.

During my travels last week, I stumbled upon this amazing shot. It was bitter cold and I noticed there were rainbow colors refracting through the clouds, so I pulled my truck over and started snapping pics. This was the best shot I took. It’s important to note that this picture has not been modified in any way. No Photoshop or any other editing program. My camera also had no filter on it. This is exactly the way the sky looked that day. Maybe it had something to do with the cold temperatures, but in any case, I was thrilled and in awe to be able to capture the image before it disappeared.

Writing prompt 1
Trying something a little different. This is a writing prompt that I made up based on this picture that I took a few years ago.
I hope it inspires you to write a story of your own. If so, I’d love to hear it.
The Storm
Author’s note: I wrote this short story a few years ago and it has been collecting virtual dust on my computer ever since. With this current storm brewing on the east coast, I thought it would be an appropriate time to share it. Enjoy.
Kevin whistled as he walked to work. He loved his job, he was good at it, and there was always a sense of anticipation.
Perhaps today will be the day, he grinned.
He sighed with contentment, as he walked over to a small desk in the middle of the circular room, and touched a button. Instantly, the walls were covered with the most detailed weather map ever seen. He could zoom in as close as he wanted on any location…
Google would be envious, he smiled.
Kevin picked up his clipboard and went straight to work. He checked down the list of priorities, then leafed through the pages. Next, he zoomed in on the central United States, pulled a pen out of his pocket, drew a few clouds, darkened them in, then stepped back to admire his work. Within a few minutes, Peoria Illinois got an extra half inch of rain, just like the clipboard had requested.
He moved to the next item, erased three clouds over Egypt. Again, within minutes, what would have been a refreshing shower, never happened. He continued down the list…
Hail in Russia.
Rain in China.
Sunny in Venezuela.
Hours later, when his list was complete, he sat back to take a break. He watched the swirls and eddies of the world, admiring the simple beauty of it. He knew exactly where every El Nino and La Nina started. He knew the cause and eventual effects of each hurricane, including their names, before they were a gust of breeze. Very little surprised Kevin when it came to the weather, but every once in a while…
It wasn’t even a breeze, yet somehow Kevin sensed it. Somewhere over the Pacific, a bird dipped to avoid a predator, leaving an eddy of wind current in its wake. He could see it in his mind’s eye…
This eddy of wind is just about to die when it meets with a small updraft, which sustains it. The two move along until another breeze adds to their strength. A low flying airplane adds speed to it. It forms a cloud or two and continues to build, now a strong rainstorm. Another storm comes up from the south and joins with this one. Together they build into the most massively destructive force the world has ever seen.
It marches around the world, causing destruction and death on a biblical scale. Buildings are destroyed, entire forests wiped out, islands and beaches disappear. Tidal waves measure hundreds of feet tall cover miles of dry land. The death toll rises like the counter on a video game, as governments try to battle this force of nature. The storm changes seismic stresses, causing dormant volcanoes to erupt. Earthquakes shake the foundation of the world. The Richter scale is rendered moot, as each quake sets a new record. Continents shear away from each other.
Astronauts in the space station record the event, watching in horror as the world tears itself apart, knowing that they will die in the remorseless cold of space. Beneath them, the storm rages on.
Cloud cover, debris, and volcanic ash combine to block out the sun. As the temperature of the planet drops, the polar ice caps grow. Humanity has been reduced to a mere million quivering souls, trying to stay warm enough to survive.
It is a much different planet now, more akin to colonizing another world than surviving on the tattered remains of their former home. A two hundred mile wide temperate zone around the equator is all that keeps the earth from being totally encased in ice. Within ten years, humanity will be extinct. Because of the violence of the storm, and its aftermath, the Earth is thrown off its axis. Within a few hundred years, it will crash into Mars, destroying both planets.
Kevin blinked hard, bringing himself back to reality. He picked up his clipboard, and double checked it.
“Not on today’s schedule,” he sighed.
He erased the small eddy of wind, and the massive storm disappeared. He set down the clipboard, returned the screen to normal, and headed for the door.
“Maybe tomorrow,” he said.
He started home, whistling as he went.
